Abuja Perinatal Symposium
A yearly meeting, hosted by Limi Children's Hospital, for the people whose decisions shape the first hours and days of a baby's life: obstetricians, midwives, neonatologists, paediatricians, nurses and the trainees who will follow them.
The Symposium in Numbers
Hosted by Limi Children's Hospital, part of The Limi Hospitals.
Why LCH Hosts a Perinatal Symposium
A newborn's outcome is often decided before the baby reaches a children's hospital: in the labour ward, in the first minutes of breathing, in how warm the baby is kept, and in how early someone calls for help.
That chain runs through several professions and several facilities. The obstetrician who sees the risk, the midwife who resuscitates, the doctor who decides to transfer, and the neonatal team who receives the baby rarely train together. The symposium puts them in one room to learn the same approach and to meet the people they will one day call at two in the morning.
What It Means for Families
When the midwife at a maternity centre and the team at a children's hospital share the same training and know each other, a baby who needs help is more likely to be recognised sooner, kept warm and safe on the way, and to arrive with the information the receiving team needs. Parents rarely see this work. Their baby benefits from it.
What the Symposium Covers
Each edition sets its own programme. These are the themes the symposium returns to.
Newborn Stabilisation
Resuscitation, warmth, glucose and breathing in the first hour, and getting a sick baby ready to move.
Prematurity, from Labour to Follow-Up
From threatened preterm labour and antenatal steroids to NICU care, discharge and follow-up.
Handover from Mother's Team to Baby's Team
What the neonatal team needs to know about the mother, the pregnancy and the birth, and how to pass it on.
Respiratory Support
Recognising breathing difficulty early, oxygen, CPAP and when to escalate.
Infection
Newborn sepsis, maternal infection, infection prevention on the ward and sensible antibiotic use.
Congenital Conditions
Birth defects and heart conditions: early recognition, first handling, documentation and referral.
Simulation
Hands-on practice of emergencies in teams, because skills that are rarely used need rehearsing.
Keeping Families Together
Keeping mothers and babies together, communicating with parents, and supporting them through a NICU stay.
